40th Wedding Anniversary, or how in the hell we got this far…

Celebrating a wedding anniversary is a sweet thing to do, reminding you of your honourable promises to one another, your depth of commitment and the profoundness and responsibility of married love. Celebrating a milestone wedding anniversary, in our case our 40th, is even more affecting, as you have earned the privilege of looking back over a vast sea of experience, knowing you’ve sailed a long way together, through rough and smooth weather, and still prefer one another’s company to anyone else’s. It is romantic, and yet it is real, because while tender hearts and willing minds allow you to rise to high emotional places, life has a habit of keeping your feet on the ground, and that combination of romance and reality is what allows a marriage to keep on keeping on. You can’t always be driven by passion, and it’s boring to be too steady...but the right mixture of both, spiced with different personalities and interests, generates a power that keeps your ship moving forward, over whatever oceans lie ahead. Our forty years have given us umpteen joys, yet moments of sorrow and struggle, too. Wrapped together, it forms one remarkable gift - life as man & wife, lovers & best friends, parents & grandparents - that has navigated the extraordinary passage from 20-somethings to mature 60-somethings, seemingly, in the blink of an eye.

So, I guess what they say must be true...time flies when you’re having fun! :)
